New One Rupee Currency Notes Coming Soon in 2020

The Government of India is now preparing to release a fresh series of One Rupee denomination currency notes in 2020 with several noticeable design changes, although the one rupee notes were reintroduced in 2015 and printed in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

The One Rupee note is unique because, unlike all other denominations issued by the Reserve Bank of India, it is printed and issued directly by the Ministry of Finance. This makes it the only currency note in India that does not carry the signature of the RBI Governor but instead bears the signature of the Finance Secretory.

The obverse side of the new One Rupee note will feature the words “भारत सरकार” above “Government of India,” along with the bilingual signature of Shri Atanu Chakraborty, Secretary, Ministry of Finance. It will also include a replica of the One Rupee coin displaying the ‘₹’ symbol and the year 2020, along with the national motto ‘सत्यमेव जयते’. The numbering panel will carry a capital inset letter ‘L’, and the numbers will appear in black on the bottom right portion of the note. These numbers will increase in size from left to right, with the first three alphanumeric characters of the prefix remaining uniform in size, in accordance with the official notification.

The reverse side will again carry “भारत सरकार” above “Government of India” and will display the year 2020 within the image of the One Rupee coin carrying the ‘₹’ symbol. The background design will showcase grains to represent India’s agricultural strength and a detailed depiction of ‘Sagar Samrat,’ India’s pioneering offshore oil exploration platform, symbolizing economic progress and energy self-reliance. The reverse will also feature the value of the note written in fifteen Indian languages in the language panel, with the year 2020 shown vertically between the illustration of Sagar Samrat and the language panel in international numerals.

The overall colour scheme of the new One Rupee note will be a combination of pink and green on both sides, giving it a refreshed visual appeal while maintaining its traditional identity. These notes will be printed using multi-tonal watermarks, adding an enhanced layer of security and authenticity. With these updates, the One Rupee note continues its distinct status as the only currency note under the direct authority of the Ministry of Finance, preserving its historical significance while incorporating modern security and design features.
