2025 - 550th Year Celebration of Partagali Math | Commemorative Coin

A commemorative coin of ₹550 will be issued to mark the 550th Year Celebration of Shree Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Mutt. The Ministry of Finance has issued the gazette notification on November 26, 2025.

The Shree Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Mutt, also known simply as Partagali Math, is one of the most revered spiritual institutions of the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin community. Rooted deeply in the Dvaita Vedanta philosophy propounded by Jagadguru Sri Madhvacharya, the Math has stood for centuries as a beacon of Vaishnava faith, culture, and learning. Situated in the serene village of Partagali in Canacona, South Goa, on the banks of the river Kushavati, it continues to guide generations of devotees with its spiritual wisdom and cultural legacy.

The origin of the Math dates back to 1475 AD, when the head of the Palimaru Math, one of the Ashta Mathas founded by Madhvacharya, while on a pilgrimage to the Himalayas, appointed a young Saraswat Brahmachari named Sri Narayan Teerth as his successor to ensure the continuity of the Dvaita tradition among the Saraswats. Sri Narayan Teerth established the Math initially at Bhatkal in Karnataka and later moved it to Gokarna, and eventually to Partagali in Goa. Under the third pontiff, Sri Jeevottam Teerth Swamiji, the Math gained prominence, and from then onward it came to be known as the Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math.

Over the centuries, the Math has played a vital role in uniting the Gaud Saraswat Brahmins who were dispersed across the Konkan and coastal Karnataka regions, especially during periods of religious and political turmoil such as the Portuguese era in Goa. It provided not only spiritual leadership but also acted as a centre of cultural preservation and social welfare. Its lineage of Swamijis has remained unbroken for more than five hundred years, each carrying forward the guru-shishya tradition with dedication and devotion. The present pontiff, His Holiness Shrimad Vidyadheesh Teerth Swamiji, assumed charge in July 2021 following the Mahasamadhi of his guru, Shrimad Vidyadhiraj Teerth Swamiji.

The Math upholds the Dvaita Vedanta philosophy which teaches the eternal distinction between the individual soul and the Supreme Being, with unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu as the ultimate reality. For the Saraswat community, it represents not only a religious centre but also a symbol of unity and resilience. Through its network of branch Maths across Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra and other parts of India, the institution continues to nurture faith, tradition, and moral values among its followers.

Partagali Math has also been deeply involved in social, educational, and charitable activities. It promotes Sanskrit education, supports scholars, and organizes Vedic learning programmes. Numerous cultural and community welfare initiatives have been undertaken under its guidance. Annual religious events and Vaishnava festivals such as Ram Navami, Nag Panchami, Ganesh Chaturthi, and various Rath Yatras are celebrated with grandeur, drawing devotees from far and wide. Spiritual discourses, bhajans, and darshan of the Swamiji form an integral part of the Math’s activities, creating an atmosphere of devotion and learning.

Architecturally, the Math is a place of tranquility and spiritual power. The main complex, surrounded by lush greenery and the flowing river Kushavati, reflects the deep-rooted heritage of the Saraswat community. The site is home to ancient idols, sacred groves, and shrines, all maintained with reverence. It continues to be an important pilgrimage destination for devotees seeking blessings and peace.

Throughout its long history, the Math has withstood several challenges—foreign invasions, migration of Saraswats, and social transitions—yet it has never deviated from its mission of upholding the principles of Dharma. Today, under the leadership of Shrimad Vidyadheesh Teerth Swamiji, the Math continues to evolve, blending traditional wisdom with modern outreach. Digital platforms and educational initiatives are being introduced to engage younger generations while retaining the sanctity of its ancient traditions.

The Shree Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math represents not only a spiritual legacy but also a cultural continuum spanning over five centuries. It embodies the journey of a community that preserved its identity through devotion, discipline, and faith. The Math stands as a living monument to India’s spiritual endurance—an unbroken chain of knowledge, service, and divine inspiration connecting the past with the present.
