2005 - 75 Years of Dandi March | Commemorative Coin

The 2nd commemorative coin for the year 2005 was released on occasion of '75 Years of Dandi March'. This marks the second coin featuring the 'Dandi March' theme, following the release of the coin commemorating the 50th Year of Independence.

The Salt Satyagraha, initiated with the historic Dandi March on March 12, 1930, stands as a pivotal chapter in the Indian independence movement. This nonviolent campaign, a resolute protest against the British salt monopoly in colonial India, served as the catalyst for the broader Civil Disobedience Movement. It represented the most formidable organized resistance to British authority since the Non-cooperation movement of 1920–22, closely following the Purna Swaraj declaration of independence by the Indian National Congress on January 26, 1930.

Guided by the visionary leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the Dandi March commenced from the Sabarmati Ashram near Ahmedabad, culminating at the sea coast near the village of Dandi. Over the course of this remarkable 24-day, 390 km journey, Gandhi and a growing multitude of Indians marched in defiance of the salt tax imposed by the British. The breaking of the salt laws at 6:30 am on April 6, 1930, by Gandhi triggered widespread civil disobedience against the British Raj's salt laws, with millions of Indians joining the movement.

The impact of the Salt Satyagraha reverberated globally, reshaping world and British perspectives on Indian independence. It marked a turning point as large numbers of Indians rallied for the cause, contributing to the transformative momentum of the freedom struggle. The subsequent Dharasana Satyagraha, featuring the brutal beating of nonviolent protesters by British police, garnered international attention through extensive newspaper and newsreel coverage. This showcased the potent efficacy of civil disobedience as a formidable technique in the fight against social and political injustice.

The commemorative serves as a poignant tribute to this watershed moment in India's quest for freedom, symbolizing the courage, resilience, and unity that defined the Salt Satyagraha.
