2016 - Maharana Pratap 475th Birth Anniversary | Commemorative Coin

The 6th commemorative coin of 2016 was released to celebrate the 475th Birth Anniversary of Maharana Pratap. 

Maharana Pratap, one of the most revered figures in Indian history, stands as an enduring symbol of courage, honour and relentless resistance for the protection of freedom. Born in 1540 at Kumbhalgarh in the Mewar region of present-day Rajasthan, he became the 13th king of Mewar and devoted his life to safeguarding the sovereignty and dignity of his kingdom during one of the most turbulent periods of medieval India. His 475th Birth Anniversary in 2015 was celebrated nationwide with deep respect, reflecting the timeless admiration he continues to command.

Maharana Pratap’s legacy is shaped largely by his unwavering defiance against the expansionist Mughal Empire under Emperor Akbar. At a time when several Rajput rulers had accepted Mughal authority, Pratap chose the difficult path of independence. His commitment to self-respect and swaraj became evident in his refusal to enter into political submission, even when offered conciliatory terms. This steadfastness became the foundation of his legend and cemented his place among the greatest warriors of the era.

The Battle of Haldighati in 1576 remains the most famous chapter of Maharana Pratap’s life. The valor displayed by the Mewar army, fighting against a vastly superior Mughal force, became a testament to the spirit of freedom that Maharana Pratap embodied. Even after Haldighati, Pratap continued to resist the Mughal Empire from the forests and mountains of Mewar, adopting guerrilla warfare tactics that allowed him to reclaim much of his lost territory in later years.

Despite the hardships he endured, Maharana Pratap ensured that the welfare of his people remained his utmost priority. During the years of exile, he never compromised on the values of justice and compassion. His dedication to his land and people was matched by his personal austerity, as he accepted a life of hardship rather than surrender. This moral strength is one of the many reasons why he is celebrated not only as a warrior king but also as a figure of righteousness and integrity.

In the later years of his rule, Maharana Pratap succeeded in restoring stability in Mewar, rebuilding fortresses and encouraging agriculture and local administration. His revival of the region despite continuous political pressure is often considered one of his greatest achievements. Maharana Pratap passed away in 1597, but his life continues to inspire generations across India.
