2016 - Maharana Pratap 475th Birth Anniversary | Commemorative Coin

The 6th commemorative coin for the year 2016 was released to celebrate the 475th Birth Anniversary of Maharana Pratap. This marked the second occasion of releasing a commemorative coin on Maharana Pratap, following the one issued in 2003.

Maharana Pratap, also known as Pratap Singh of Mewar (May 9, 1540 – January 19, 1597), stood as a prominent Hindu ruler of Mewar, a state in north-western India. Revered in popular Indian culture, Maharana Pratap is considered an embodiment of qualities such as bravery and chivalry, serving as an aspirational figure for the Rajputs.

In 1568, under the reign of Udai Singh II, the historic fortress of Chittor fell to the Mughal Emperor Akbar after the third Jauhar at Chittor. Despite this defeat, Udai Singh and the royal family of Mewar managed to escape before the capture of the fort and established a new settlement in the foothills of the Aravalli Range, founding the city of Udaipur. Rana Udai Singh envisioned his favorite son, Jagmal, as his successor. However, senior nobles, adhering to customary practices, insisted on Pratap, the eldest son, ascending to the throne. During the coronation ceremony, Jagmal was physically removed from the palace by the Chundawat Chief and Tomar Ramshah, and Pratap was rightfully proclaimed as the King and Rana of Mewar.

RBI Coin Sets Now Available at India Govt Mint's Delhi Counter

The ₹90  commemorative coin  issued to celebrate the  90 Years of Reserve Bank of India  (RBI) is now available at the Sales Counter at India Government Mint's Corporate Office in New Delhi. The ₹90 coin, featured in the Proof Set and offered in Folder/Blister packaging, is priced at ₹4950 as of April 18, 2024. However, online bookings for the commemorative coin have not yet begun, and there may be a difference in online pricing. It's important to note that the  metal composition  of this ₹90 coin is Pure Silver (99.9%), weighing 40 grams with a diameter of 44 mm. It also features 200 serrations along the edge. The ₹90 is minted by India Government Mint, Kolkata.
