Indian Museum, Kolkata

The Indian Museum in Kolkata, also referred to as the Imperial Museum at Calcutta in British India era texts, is the largest and oldest museum in India and has rare collections of coins, antiques, armour and ornaments, fossils, skeletons, mummies, and Mughal paintings.


It was founded by the Asiatic Society of Bengal in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, in 1814. The founder curator was Nathaniel Wallich, a Danish botanist.

The Indian Museum has a unique assemblage of coins, numbering more than fifty-two thousand. These coins come from different regions of the Indian subcontinent and range in date from c. fifth to fourth century BC to present date. The Gallery displays replicas including some original coins representing from earliest Indigenous uninscribed coins (c. 5th century BC to 2nd century AD) to the coins of the Republic of India in the 20 showcases of the Gallery.

The museum is open for a visit on all days from 10 AM to 5 PM apart from National and State Holidays.
