Vice President Releases Coins on Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis

The Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, released a ₹125 commemorative coin along with a ₹5 circulation coin on the occasion of Statistics Day and the 125th Birth Anniversary of P.C. Mahalanobis on Friday, June 29, 2018.

The event was attended by Shri D. V. Sadananda Gowda, Minister of Statistics and Programme Implementation; Shri Bratya Basu, Minister of Information & Technology, Government of West Bengal; and several other dignitaries.

Addressing the gathering in Kolkata, the Vice President emphasized that every citizen has an active role to play in nation-building. He highlighted that people are not merely beneficiaries but essential contributors to progress and positive change. Paying tribute to P.C. Mahalanobis, he described him as an iconic visionary who introduced the Indian subcontinent to modern statistics, and noted that his application-driven research laid the foundation for the contemporary official statistical system in India.

The Vice President spoke about India's demographic potential, noting that over 65% of the population is under the age of 35. He stressed the importance of converting this vast human resource into productive human capital, warning that failure to do so could lead to socio-economic challenges such as poverty, inequality, unrest, and unsustainable growth. To harness this demographic dividend, he underlined the need to equip the youth with skills, knowledge, and the right attitude suited for a twenty-first-century knowledge economy.

He further remarked that statistics serves as the backbone of good governance, forming the basis for effective planning, monitoring, and evaluation. Reliable data and analytical tools, he noted, are vital for improving quality of life and enabling informed decision-making. The Vice President also reflected on India’s distinguished mathematical heritage, citing legends such as Bhaskaracharya, Aryabhata, and Srinivasa Ramanujan, and called for strengthening the quality of mathematics education at all levels.

This release marks the second commemorative coin of the year 2018, minted by the India Government Mint, Kolkata. The bookings are expected to open soon on the India Government Mint's website and will be updated in the current and upcoming bookings section.
