Finance Minister Confirms the Issuance of New Coin Series
The Hon’ble Minister of Finance, Shri Piyush Goyal, underscored the importance of fully leveraging the capabilities of the Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL) and expanding its presence in the international market, with the objective of achieving substantial growth in profits.
These remarks were made during the 13th Foundation Day of SPMCIL held on February 10, 2019, highlighting the government’s focus on modernizing and strengthening India’s minting and security printing infrastructure.
The Economic Affairs Secretary, Shri Subhash Chandra Garg, who was also present at the event, officially confirmed the design and upcoming release of a new definitive coin series. A key feature of this series is its accessibility for visually impaired individuals, reflecting the government’s inclusive approach in designing currency that can be used by all sections of society.
Contrary to earlier speculation that the new coin series might feature themes such as "Digital India," "Swachh Bharat," "Beti Padhao Beti Bachao," and "Make in India," the Ministry clarified that the series will be themed around "Agriculture," celebrating the backbone of India’s economy and recognizing the contributions of farmers to national growth.
The new coin series will include denominations of ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, and ₹10, in addition to the introduction of a new ₹20 bi-metallic coin. This move is expected to enhance the usability of currency across the country, while also promoting themes of national significance through circulation coins.
The announcement has generated excitement among numismatists and collectors, as the new series promises both functional currency and aesthetically appealing designs, continuing India’s tradition of combining artistry with practicality in its coinage.
