Smt. Meenakashi Lekhi Unveils ₹200 and ₹10 Coins on Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji

The Minister of External Affairs and Culture, Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, unveiled the commemorative coin with denominations of ₹200 and ₹10 on the occasion of the 208th Prakash Purab of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji in the benign presence of Sri Satguru Uday Singh Ji at Namdhari Gurdwara Ramesh Nagar, New Delhi, on February 11, 2024.

Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji Kuka, a revered spiritual leader and social reformer, left an indelible mark on history with his teachings and transformative impact on society. Born on 3 February 1816, in Bhaini, Punjab, Satguru Ram Singh Ji emerged as a beacon of inspiration during a crucial period in India's history. His teachings, principles, and the Kuka Movement played a pivotal role in shaping the socio-religious landscape of the time.

The Hon'ble Minister, while reflecting on the contributions of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji to the freedom movement, emphasised his role as a philanthropist, thinker, seer, and a significant social reformer. She highlighted that Satguru Ram Singh Ji pioneered the use of non-cooperation and swadeshi as tools to liberate the country from British rule. Satguru advocated for the promotion of Indian identity and products, urging people to be Indian, stay Indian, and buy Indian.

Furthermore, the Minister pointed out Satguru's progressive initiatives, such as discouraging the killing of infant girls, leading a movement against Sati Pratha, and advocating for equal rights to education for girls. In 1857, he set the age of marriage at 18 for girls and 20 for boys. Despite facing exile to Myanmar in 1872, Satguru Ram Singh Ji continued to inspire people to follow the path of sacrifice, cooperation, self-reliance, and the principle of live and let live.

This theme was initially planned for release in 2016 to commemorate the event but faced significant delays. It's worth noting that a smaller denomination of ₹10 has been issued after a considerable period, although its circulation issuance remains doubtful.

This marks the fifth commemorative coin release for the year 2024, minted by the India Government Mint, Kolkata. Stay tuned for upcoming booking details to get updates on booking from the India Government Mint's website.
