PM Modi Releases ₹50 Coin on Golden Jubilee of Sikkim's Statehood

The Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, virtually released a ₹50 commemorative coin, a postal stamp and a souvenir today, May 29, 2025, to mark 50 Glorious Years of Sikkim's Statehood, during a ceremony held at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok.

Due to weather conditions, the Prime Minister attended the event virtually, while the commemorative coin, postal stamp and souvenir were physically released by the Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur, and the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang.

The Government of Sikkim has launched a year-long celebration under the theme “Sunaulo, Samriddha, and Samarth Sikkim”. On this occasion, the Prime Minister also virtually inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several key development projects, including a ₹750 crore, 500-bedded District Hospital in Namchi, a Passenger Ropeway in Pelling, and a statue of Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji.

Addressing the gathering, the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, remarked that 50 years ago, Sikkim chose a democratic path, aligning not only with India’s geography but also with its soul. He said the people believed that when every voice is heard and rights are secured, equal opportunities for development naturally follow. Today, he noted, the trust of every Sikkimese family has grown stronger, and the results of that trust are evident in the state’s remarkable progress.

“Sikkim is the pride of the nation,” declared the Prime Minister, highlighting how, over five decades, the state has evolved into a model of sustainable development. It has become a sanctuary of biodiversity, achieved 100% organic farming status, and stands as a beacon of cultural and heritage prosperity. He further noted that Sikkim now ranks among the states with the highest per capita income—a testament to the capability and resilience of its people.

Shri Modi also acknowledged the many talented individuals from Sikkim who have shone brightly over the decades, contributing to India’s rich cultural mosaic. He praised the role of every community in shaping the state’s vibrant culture and prosperity.

This marks the 9th commemorative coin release for the year 2025, minted by the India Government Mint, Kolkata. The bookings for the coin are expected to open soon on the India Government Mint's website, with updates provided in the current and upcoming bookings section.
