New Commemorative Coin: Somnath Swabhiman Parv

The Government of India will issue a ₹75 commemorative coin to mark 1,000 years of unbroken faith associated with the sacred Somnath Temple. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on May 8, 2026, confirming this coin.

Somnath Swabhiman Parv is observed as an expression of national pride, cultural continuity, and civilizational self-confidence associated with the historic reconstruction of the sacred Somnath Temple. The observance commemorates two important milestones connected with the shrine—the completion of 1,000 years since the first recorded attack on the temple in 1026 CE and 75 years since its reopening in 1951 following reconstruction in independent India.

The metal composition of the ₹75 coin will consist of Pure Silver (99.9%). The coin will weigh 40 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “75” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of the coin shall bear the image of Somnath Temple, Gujarat. On the upper periphery of the coin, the inscription “भारत की अटूट आस्था और अध्यात्म के 1000 वर्षों का उत्सव" shall be inscribed in Devanagari script. On the lower periphery of the coin, the inscription “A Celebration of 1000 Years of India’s Unwavering Faith and Devotion” shall be inscribed in English. The inscription “सोमनाथ मंदिर, गुजरात” shall be written in Devanagari script on the left side of the Somnath Temple image. The year “2026” in international numeral shall be inscribed below the image of Somnath Temple.

This ₹75 coin honouring the sacred Somnath Temple is expected to generate considerable interest among collectors and the wider numismatic community. Additionally, there are other commemorative coin releases to look forward to in the coming months.
