2020 - 75 Years of Food & Agriculture Organization | Commemorative Coin
The second commemorative coin for the year 2020 was released to mark the 75 Years of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), established on 16th October 1945, is a specialized agency of the United Nations, and this date is annually celebrated as World Food Day. India, a founding member, commenced close collaboration with FAO in 1948 when it initiated operations in the country. Dr. Binay Ranjan Sen, an eminent figure from India, served as the Director General of FAO from 1956 to 1967.
FAO is entrusted with the mission of enhancing agricultural, forestry, and fisheries practices to ensure global food security and nutrition, with a particular focus on developing and underdeveloped nations. The organization is committed to implementing initiatives and programs that promote productive and sustainable agriculture, reduce rural poverty, and establish inclusive, efficient agriculture and food systems to safeguard livelihoods.
In the context of India, FAO has played a pivotal role by providing technical, financial, and training assistance across various domains. The organization, through its programs, pioneers innovative approaches tailored to the country's context. It not only introduces successful approaches and tools but also facilitates their scaling up by other donors, State/Union Governments. These initiatives align with India's priorities and contribute significantly to the nation's pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals, incorporating technical expertise and innovative best practices with both national and regional perspectives. FAO's collaborative efforts in India underscore its commitment to fostering positive change in agriculture and related sectors, emphasizing sustainability, inclusivity, and progress toward global development goals.
