The 2nd commemorative coin of 2019 was released to mark the Birth Centenary of Dr. M. G. Ramachandran.

Dr. Marudur Gopalan Ramachandran, fondly known as M.G.R., remains one of the most revered figures in Tamil Nadu’s public life, remembered as a charismatic actor, beloved leader, and transformational statesman whose legacy continues to shape the state’s socio-political landscape. Born on January 17, 1917, in Kandy, Sri Lanka, M.G.R. rose from modest beginnings to become a cultural icon and later the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, serving three consecutive terms. His life stands as a testament to perseverance, compassion, and a deep commitment to public service.

M.G.R.’s entry into cinema marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey. His films portrayed him as a champion of justice, a protector of the downtrodden, and a figure of unwavering moral strength. This cinematic persona resonated profoundly with audiences, who saw in him not just a star but a guardian who stood for righteousness. Movies such as Nadodi Mannan, Enga Veettu Pillai, and Ayirathil Oruvan not only shaped Tamil cinema’s golden era but also cemented M.G.R.’s place in the hearts of millions.

His transition from cinema to politics was seamless, powered by his immense popularity and his desire to contribute to society beyond the screen. A member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) initially, he later founded the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in 1972 after ideological differences. Under his leadership, the party rapidly grew, driven by M.G.R.’s appeal, welfare-oriented vision, and unwavering connection with people from all walks of life.

As Chief Minister, M.G.R. ushered in an era of social welfare reforms that left a lasting impact. His pioneering initiatives included the nutritious midday meal scheme for schoolchildren, which significantly improved enrollment and child welfare across the state. His administration emphasized accessible healthcare, poverty alleviation, and inclusive development, ensuring that the benefits of governance reached even the most marginalized communities. His empathy for the poor, combined with sound administrative execution, earned him unparalleled respect and affection.

Despite confronting health challenges, M.G.R.’s dedication to his responsibilities never diminished. Even during his medical treatment abroad, the support he received from the people of Tamil Nadu showcased their deep emotional bond with him. His passing on December 24, 1987, marked the end of an extraordinary era, and the outpouring of grief across the state reflected the profound influence he had on countless lives.

Today, Dr. M.G. Ramachandran’s legacy remains vibrant in Tamil Nadu’s socio-political fabric. His contributions to cinema continue to be celebrated, his welfare schemes are remembered with gratitude, and his leadership is regarded as a golden chapter in the state’s history.
