2022 - Kavi Muddana 150th Birth Anniversary | Commemorative Coin

The first commemorative coin of 2022 was issued to mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Kavi Muddana and was released on the occasion of his 152nd Birth Anniversary.

Kavi Muddana, one of the most celebrated literary figures of Karnataka, occupies a unique place in the cultural and linguistic heritage of the region. Born as Nandalike Lakshminaranappa in 1870 in the village of Nandalike in present-day Udupi district, he later became renowned by the pen name Muddana. 

His contributions to Kannada literature are remembered for their poetic brilliance, imaginative storytelling, and the seamless blend of classical depth with folk sensibility. Muddana emerged during a period when Kannada literature was undergoing transformation, with writers exploring new styles while remaining rooted in traditional forms. His works reflect a deep familiarity with classical epics and puranic lore, yet they are enriched by his creative interpretation and lyrical expression. 

He is best known for works like Ratnavati Kalyana and Adbhuta Ramayana, which showcase his mastery in weaving mythological narratives with literary elegance. His ability to infuse familiar tales with fresh emotion and poetic charm earned him the admiration of scholars and readers alike. His writing style is characterized by musicality, vivid imagery, and an intuitive understanding of human emotions.
