2024 - Muthuvel Karunanidhi | Commemorative Coin

It has been reported that the Ministry of Finance has granted approval for the Government of Tamil Nadu's request to issue the commemorative coin to mark Birth Centenary of M. Karunanidhi. However, it is imperative to await the gazette notification from the Ministry of Finance for confirmation.

Muthuvel Karunanidhi (3 June 1924 – 7 August 2018) was a prominent Indian writer and politician, known for his significant contributions to both fields. He served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for nearly two decades, spanning five terms from 1969 to 2011. Affectionately referred to as "Kalaignar" (Artist) and "Mutthamizh Arignar" (Tamil Scholar), he earned these titles due to his remarkable contributions to Tamil literature. Karunanidhi's tenure as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu was the longest in the state's history, lasting for 6,863 days.

In addition to his political leadership, he was a steadfast advocate of the Dravidian movement and served as the ten-time president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam political party. Notably, Karunanidhi held the remarkable record of never losing an election to the Tamil Nadu Assembly, securing victory 13 times since his initial triumph in 1957.

Prior to entering the realm of politics, Karunanidhi made a name for himself in the Tamil film industry as a screenwriter. He also made significant contributions to Tamil literature, including authoring stories, plays, novels, and a multi-volume memoir. Karunanidhi's passing occurred on 7 August 2018 at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai after enduring a series of prolonged, age-related illnesses.

His influence extended internationally, as he delivered the special address on the inaugural day of the 3rd World Tamil Conference held in Paris in 1970 and the inaugural day of the 6th World Tamil Conference held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1987. Additionally, he penned the song "Semmozhiyaana Tamizh Mozhiyaam," the official theme song for the World Classical Tamil Conference in 2010, which was set to music by the renowned A. R. Rahman.
