2026 - 10 Years of PMSMA | Commemorative Coin

A ₹75 commemorative coin will be issued to mark the completion of 10 years of the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA), celebrating a decade of dedicated maternal healthcare under the theme “A Decade of Care.” The Ministry of Finance has issued the gazette notification on June 8, 2026.

Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) is a flagship initiative of the Government of India launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on 9 June 2016 with the objective of providing assured, comprehensive, and quality antenatal care to all pregnant women across the country. The programme was introduced to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality by ensuring that every pregnant woman receives at least one specialized antenatal check-up during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Through this initiative, the government seeks to identify and manage high-risk pregnancies at an early stage, thereby improving maternal and child health outcomes.

Under PMSMA, free antenatal services are provided on the 9th day of every month at designated government health facilities, including Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, District Hospitals, and Medical Colleges. Pregnant women are offered a range of services such as physical examinations, blood pressure monitoring, haemoglobin testing, blood and urine investigations, nutritional counselling, screening for anaemia and infections, and assessment of fetal growth and well-being. The programme also facilitates timely referrals for women requiring advanced medical attention.

A distinctive feature of PMSMA is the active participation of private-sector medical specialists, including obstetricians, gynaecologists, radiologists, and physicians, who voluntarily contribute their expertise in government health facilities. This public-private partnership strengthens the healthcare system and expands access to specialized maternal healthcare services, particularly in underserved and rural areas.

The initiative places special emphasis on the identification of high-risk pregnancies. Women diagnosed with conditions such as severe anaemia, hypertension, gestational diabetes, multiple pregnancies, previous caesarean deliveries, or other medical complications are closely monitored and provided with appropriate treatment and follow-up care. A colour-coded system is used to categorize pregnant women, enabling healthcare workers to easily identify those requiring additional attention and support.

Since its launch, PMSMA has significantly contributed to increasing antenatal care coverage and promoting institutional healthcare during pregnancy. Millions of pregnant women have benefited from the programme, and a substantial number of high-risk pregnancies have been identified and managed effectively. The initiative aligns with India’s broader commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals related to maternal and child health and reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths.

Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan represents an important step toward ensuring safe motherhood and healthy pregnancies in India. By combining regular health check-ups, early risk detection, expert medical care, and community awareness, the programme strengthens maternal healthcare services and helps create a healthier future for mothers and children across the nation.
