2025 - Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee | Commemorative Coin
The 15th commemorative coin of 2025 was released to mark the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. This is the second time a commemorative theme has been dedicated to him.
Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was a prominent Indian politician, educationist, and nationalist leader who played a crucial role in shaping India’s political landscape. Born on July 6, 1901, in Kolkata, he was a visionary leader dedicated to the cause of national unity and integrity. His contributions to India's freedom movement and post-independence governance remain significant to this day.
Dr. Mookerjee was a brilliant scholar who pursued higher education in law and became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta at the age of 33. His commitment to education and reform led him to actively participate in the nationalist movement. Initially associated with the Indian National Congress, he later joined the Hindu Mahasabha, advocating for the rights of Hindus and the protection of Indian culture and traditions.
After independence, Dr. Mookerjee served as India’s first Minister for Industry and Supply in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet. However, he strongly opposed Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. In 1951, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the ideological predecessor of today’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with the vision of building a strong and united India.
His opposition to the special status of Jammu and Kashmir led to his arrest in 1953 when he entered the region without a permit. He died under controversial circumstances on June 23, 1953, while in detention, and his demise remains a subject of debate and inquiry.
Dr. Mookerjee’s legacy continues to inspire millions, particularly those advocating for national unity and integrity. His contributions to Indian politics, education, and governance are widely recognized. In 2025, India celebrates his 125th Birth Anniversary, a momentous occasion to reflect on his enduring impact and honor his dedication to the nation.
