2013 - Swami Vivekananda | Commemorative Coin
The first commemorative coin for the year 2013 was released to mark the 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
Swami Vivekananda (12 January 1863–4 July 1902), born Narendra Nath Datta, played a pivotal role in introducing Indian philosophies, particularly Vedanta and Yoga, to the western world. Credited with elevating interfaith awareness, he significantly contributed to positioning Hinduism as a major world religion in the late 19th century. A driving force in the revival of Hinduism in India, he also played a crucial role in shaping the notion of nationalism during the colonial era.
As the chief disciple of the 19th-century saint Ramakrishna, Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission, institutions dedicated to the service of humanity. His inspirational speech, famously beginning with "Sisters and Brothers of America," delivered at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893, remains a landmark moment in the introduction of Hinduism to the global stage.
Born into an aristocratic Bengali family in Calcutta, Vivekananda displayed an early inclination towards spirituality. Guided by his guru Ramakrishna, he imbibed the idea that all living beings were manifestations of the divine self, emphasizing the service to mankind as a form of service to God. Following his guru's passing, Vivekananda extensively toured the Indian subcontinent, gaining firsthand knowledge of the conditions prevailing in British India. Subsequently, he represented India as a delegate in the 1893 Parliament of World Religions in the United States.
During his travels, Vivekananda conducted numerous public and private lectures, spreading the principles of Hindu philosophy in the United States, England, and Europe. In India, he is revered as a patriotic saint, and his birthday is celebrated as National Youth Day, reflecting his enduring influence on the youth and the nation. Swami Vivekananda's teachings and legacy continue to inspire millions globally, making him a revered figure in the realms of spirituality, philosophy, and the promotion of universal values.
