2010 - Dr. Rajendra Prasad | Commemorative Coin

In the year 2010, the first commemorative coin was released to mark the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Dr. Rajendra Prasad, born on 3 December 1884, played a pivotal role in shaping the destiny of India. He made history by becoming the nation's inaugural President, serving from 26 January 1950 to 13 May 1962. A luminary in India's struggle for independence, he emerged as one of the principal architects of the Indian Republic, contributing significantly to the drafting of its first constitution.

Prasad's journey in the political arena began in 1911 when he formally joined the Indian National Congress. His encounter with Mahatma Gandhi during the Lucknow Session of the Congress in 1916 left an indelible mark on him. Drawn by Gandhi's dedication, courage, and conviction, Prasad abandoned his lucrative legal career and university duties in 1920 to actively participate in the Non-Cooperation Movement.

Throughout his illustrious career, Prasad held various significant positions. In 1946, he assumed the role of the first Minister of Food and Agriculture in the Interim National Government. Additionally, he served as the President of the Constituent Assembly from 11 December 1946 to 1950, overseeing the drafting of India's first constitution. His commitment to public service led him to be elected as the Indian National Congress President multiple times, notably in 1934 and again in 1947.

Notably, after the Independence of India on 15 August 1947, he was instrumental in the formation of the Interim Government and played a crucial role in the constituent assembly. The fruition of these efforts came on 26 January 1950 when the Constitution of independent India was officially ratified, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad assumed the mantle of the nation's first President.

During his twelve-year presidency, Prasad adhered to the constitutional role of the president, maintaining independence from active political involvement. However, he became more engaged in national affairs, particularly during the discussions around the Hindu Code Bill.

In 1962, after serving two terms as President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad decided to retire. He stepped down from the presidency on 13 May 1962, returning to Patna, where he chose to reside on the campus of Bihar Vidyapeeth. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award. Dr. Rajendra Prasad breathed his last on 28 February 1963, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
