2004 - K Kamaraj Birth Centenary | Commemorative Coin

The 2nd commemorative coin for the year 2004 was released on occasion of Birth Centenary of K Kamaraj.

Kumarasami Kamaraj, better known as K. Kamaraj (15 July 1903 – 2 October 1975), remains an iconic Indian politician hailing from Tamil Nadu, often recognized as the "Kingmaker" who wielded considerable influence in Indian politics during the 1960s. Serving as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 1954 to 1963, and as a Member of Parliament during 1952-1954 and 1969-1975, Kamaraj left an indelible mark on the political landscape.

A luminary in the Indian independence movement, Kamaraj held a prominent position within the Indian National Congress, playing a pivotal role in catapulting two Prime Ministers, Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1964 and Indira Gandhi in 1966, to power. Known for his simplicity and unwavering integrity, he earned the enduring respect of the political fraternity.

In his home state of Tamil Nadu, Kamaraj is fondly remembered for his transformative initiatives that significantly impacted education. During his tenure as Chief Minister, he pioneered the introduction of free education and the groundbreaking free Mid-day Meal Scheme, bringing the gift of schooling to millions of rural poor. This legacy has left an indelible imprint on the educational landscape of Tamil Nadu.

Recognising his exceptional contributions, Kamaraj was posthumously honoured with India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1976. His demise on October 2, 1975, marked the end of an era as Kamaraj passed away peacefully in his sleep, leaving behind a legacy of political sagacity, social reform, and unparalleled dedication to the welfare of the people.
