2016 - National Archives of India | Commemorative Coin

The 3rd commemorative coin for the year 2016 was released to celebrate the 125 Years of National Archives of India.

The National Archives of India (NAI) serves as the custodian of the non-current records of the Government of India, preserving them for the benefit of administrators and scholars. Established as the Imperial Record Department in 1891 in Calcutta, the then capital of British India, the NAI is currently located at the intersection of Janpath and Rajpath in Delhi. It operates as an Attached Office of the Department of Culture under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Originally founded on 11 March 1891 in Calcutta, the Imperial Record Department relocated to the new capital, New Delhi, in 1911, and later moved to its present building in 1926. The architectural style of the building is late neo-classical and was initially named the Imperial Record Office. Today, the NAI stands as a significant institution, preserving the historical records that offer valuable insights into India's administrative and cultural heritage.
