1992 - Death Anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi | Commemorative Coin

The first commemorative coin of 1992 was released to mark the first death anniversary of Shri Rajiv Gandhi.

Shri Rajiv Gandhi, the 6th Prime Minister of India, remains one of the most influential and dynamic leaders in the country’s modern political history. Born on August 20, 1944, into the Nehru-Gandhi family, he was initially drawn to aviation and trained as a pilot before entering politics following the untimely death of his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi in 1980. Rajiv Gandhi assumed leadership of the Indian National Congress and soon became Prime Minister after the tragic assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi, in 1984. At the age of 40, he was India’s youngest Prime Minister, bringing a fresh perspective and energy to governance.

During his tenure from 1984 to 1989, Rajiv Gandhi prioritized modernization and technological advancement, emphasizing the role of science and technology in transforming India into a progressive nation. His government undertook major initiatives in telecommunications, education, and computerization, laying the groundwork for India’s later emergence as an information technology hub. He also focused on economic reforms and infrastructure development while advocating for the empowerment of youth and marginalized communities. Internationally, Rajiv Gandhi sought to strengthen India’s diplomatic ties and played a significant role in peace initiatives in South Asia, including efforts to resolve conflicts in Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Despite his achievements, his tenure faced challenges, including political controversies and criticism over certain policies. Nevertheless, Rajiv Gandhi’s vision for a modern, forward-looking India left a lasting imprint on the country’s political and developmental landscape. His tragic assassination on May 21, 1991, during an election campaign in Tamil Nadu, cut short a promising career, leaving the nation in mourning. In memory of his contributions, numerous institutions, memorials, and commemorative initiatives have been established, reflecting his enduring legacy. Rajiv Gandhi’s life and leadership continue to inspire generations of Indians, emphasizing the importance of innovation, inclusive governance, and the pursuit of progress for a rapidly changing nation.

Kolkata Mint Commences Bookings for RSS Coin Sets

The India Government Mint, Kolkata, has commenced the bookings for the ₹100  commemorative coin  issued to mark the 100 Years of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The bookings are open from October 7, 2025, and it is subject to limited availability. Earlier, on October 1, 2025, the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, unveiled the commemorative coin along with a special postal stamp to mark the event at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi. The ₹100 coin is currently available in the Proof Set, packaged with a booklet pack. It remains to be seen whether the Mint will also issue the UNC Set with a booklet pack or the Proof Set with an MDF box.  The ₹100 coin is priced at ₹8,410 for the Proof Set, which comes packaged with a booklet pack.
