Beware of Fake Nabakelebara Coins on Online Shopping Portals

The counterfeit ₹1000 commemorative coin featuring the Shri Jagannath Nabakelebara theme have begun appearing across various online shopping platforms, despite the fact that the official coin has not yet been commenced bookings from the India Government Mint, Mumbai.

This early flood of fakes is not only alarming but also highlights the growing vulnerability of unsuspecting collectors who rely on online marketplaces.

Spotting these fake coins is relatively easy due to a glaring spelling error: the inscription on the counterfeit reads “Shri Jagganath Nabakelebra” instead of the correct “Shri Jagannath Nabakelebara.” Such inaccuracies are a common trait among forged commemorative pieces, making it essential for collectors to examine details closely before making any purchase.

This is not the first time counterfeit commemorative coins have emerged even before official mint releases. Earlier reports highlighted similar instances where fraudulent coins circulated widely, misleading buyers and diminishing trust within the numismatic community.

Unfortunately, the India Government Mint has shown minimal visible intervention so far, allowing counterfeiters to exploit the situation. As a result, yet another fake coin has surfaced, and it is likely that more will follow if swift corrective measures are not taken.

The ICCG (Indian Coins and Currency Group) has been actively identifying and reporting these counterfeit coins to the India Government Mint as well as relevant law enforcement authorities. Their efforts underscore the urgency of addressing this issue to protect collectors, preserve authenticity, and uphold the integrity of Indian Numismatics. It is hoped that strong legal action will soon be taken against those who prey on collectors’ hard-earned money.

Collectors are advised to remain vigilant and purchase coins only from official and verified sources. The India Government Mint, Mumbai will announce legitimate booking details for the authentic Nabakelebara commemorative coin exclusively through its official website and through advertisements in reputed newspapers. Until such notification is released, any coin offered online should be treated as suspicious.

Staying informed and cautious is the best defense against counterfeiters seeking to exploit the growing interest in commemorative coins.
