No Green Signal for ICC World Cup 2019 Commemorative Coins

The much-anticipated issuance of ICC World Cup 2019 commemorative coins—featuring a ₹1000 coin and a ₹500 coin—now appears to have been cancelled, indicating that the Government of India has shelved its earlier proposal.

Initial reports had suggested that the India Government Mint, Mumbai was preparing to issue India’s first-ever pure gold commemorative coin, valued at ₹1000 and measuring approximately 18 mm, along with a ₹500 silver coin of the standard 44 mm diameter.

Leaked promotional materials and mock-up images featuring ICC World Cup 2019 branding had circulated widely across social media, creating considerable excitement among collectors.

Despite these early indications, it now seems that the Ministry of Finance did not grant final approval for the release. Without an official gazette notification, the coinage cannot be legally issued, and all available information points to the likelihood that the proposal has been dropped.

With the ICC World Cup 2019 concluded and no formal announcement from the Ministries or from the India Government Mint, the commemorative coin series—once expected to be a historic first for Republic India coinage—appears to have been quietly cancelled. Collectors will now have to wait for future opportunities for precious metal coin releases.
