New Commemorative Coin: 250th Session of Rajya Sabha

The Government of India will issue a ₹250 commemorative coin to mark the '250th Session of Rajya Sabha'. The Ministry of Finance issued the gazette notification on November 08, 2019, confirming the coin.

In the midst of challenges, with leaders of the ruling coalition questioning its relevance and branding it obstructionist, the Rajya Sabha is poised to commemorate its 250th session in November-December this year.

The metal composition of the ₹250 coin will consist of Pure Silver (99.9%). The coin will weigh 40 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “250” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of the coin will feature the image of Parliament House with National Flag on top and seating arrangement of Rajya Sabha Chamber along with the portrait of 'Mahatma Gandhi' in the center. The inscription "राज्य सभा का 250 वां सत्र” in Hindi and “250th Session of Rajya Sabha” in English is depicted on upper and lower periphery of the coin with the year "2019" below the image of Parliament House.

This should mark the 8th commemorative coin for the year 2019, and the denomination of ₹250 will be issued for the first time in the history of Republic India Coinage. The possibility and upcoming coins page have been updated for your reference.
