PM Modi Releases First-Ever ₹550 Coin on Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji
The Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today unveiled a ₹550 commemorative coin to mark the 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji at Gurdaspur, Punjab.
Participating in a special event at Dera Baba Nanak, held alongside the inauguration of the Integrated Check Post (ICP) and the Kartarpur Corridor, the Prime Minister urged everyone to uphold the teachings and values of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
The event was attended by Punjab Chief Minister Shri Amarinder Singh, former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Shri Sukhbir Singh Badal, Shri Navjot Singh Sidhu, and several other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said he felt deeply honoured to dedicate the Kartarpur Corridor to the nation at this sacred site. Earlier, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) had felicitated him with the Quami Seva Award, which he dedicated to the lotus feet of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
He noted that the inauguration of the ICP and the Kartarpur Corridor on the auspicious 550th Prakash Parv was a divine blessing, easing the travel of pilgrims to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan. He expressed gratitude to the SGPC, the Punjab Government, the teams who completed the corridor in record time, and also to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan and officials for their cooperation.
The Prime Minister described Guru Nanak Dev Ji as a universal inspiration — not only a Guru but a philosophy and guiding light who taught honesty, self-confidence, equality, unity, and the removal of social evils. The Kartarpur Corridor, he said, would benefit thousands of devotees wishing to visit the sacred site imbued with the Guru’s divine presence.
He also highlighted the Government’s sustained efforts over the past five years to preserve India’s cultural heritage. Numerous programmes are being organized across India and abroad to mark the 550th Prakash Parv. He recalled the grand celebrations of the 350th birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, including the establishment of a 750-bed modern hospital in Jamnagar in his honour.
Sharing ongoing initiatives, he mentioned that Guru Vani is being translated into several world languages with UNESCO’s support and that Sultanpur Lodhi is being developed as a heritage town. A special train now connects several key sites associated with Guru Nanak Dev Ji, and connectivity among Amritsar, Nanded, Patna Sahib, Huzoor Sahib, and other important locations has been strengthened. He also noted the inclusion of the Ek Omkar message on Air India’s Amritsar–London flights.
The Prime Minister added that several recent government decisions have benefitted Sikh families globally. Simplified Visa and OCI rules have made it easier for families to reconnect with relatives and visit pilgrimage centres in India. The removal of Article 370 has ensured equal rights for Sikhs in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, while the Citizenship Amendment Bill aims to support Sikhs seeking Indian citizenship.
Honouring the sacrifices of Sikh Gurus and countless Sikhs who served the nation, he said the Centre is recognising this legacy through various initiatives, including the modernisation of the Jallianwala Bagh Memorial and extensive support for Sikh youth, with 27 lakh Sikh students receiving scholarships.
This release marks the seventh commemorative coin of 2019, minted by the India Government Mint, Kolkata, and represents the first-ever coin issued in the ₹550 denomination in the history of Republic India coinage. The bookings are expected to open soon on the India Government Mint's website and will be updated in the current and upcoming bookings section.
