Royal Mint Releases £5 commemorative coin on Mahatma Gandhi

The Royal Mint pays tribute to the life and enduring legacy of Mahatma Gandhi with the unveiling of a new commemorative coin today. This coin, designed to honor the influential figure, serves as a testament to his profound impact on history and his contributions to the principles of non-violence and civil rights. The coin not only celebrates the man himself but also aims to inspire reflection on the values he championed.

It is the first time that Mahatma Gandhi has been commemorated on an official United Kingdom coin, designed and made by The Royal Mint. Struck in the 75th year of India’s Independence, the coin features an image of a lotus, India’s national flower, and one of Mahatma Gandhi’s most famous quotes – ‘My life is my message’.

Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Master of the Mint  today unveiled a new £5 coin celebrating the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi – one of the world’s most influential leaders, said: “This coin is a fitting tribute to an influential leader who inspired millions of people around the world for his social activism, As a practicing Hindu, I am proud to unveil this coin during Diwali".

Nicola Howell, Chief Customer Officer for The Royal Mint, said: “We are delighted to unveil the first official UK coin commemorating the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi".

Mahatma Gandhi was instrumental in the movement for Indian independence and it is fantastic to have a UK coin commemorating his remarkable life for the first time.

Apart from £5, a £100 non-circulating coin in 999.9 Fine Gold has been issued by the Royal Mint. The  uncirculated and proof coin sets are available for purchase at official website of Royal Mint.

In 2019, India marked the '150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi' by releasing a non-circulating commemorative coin with a denomination of ₹150. This special coin served as a tribute to the enduring legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, commemorating his significant contributions to India's history and the principles of non-violence.

Notably, Mahatma Gandhi has been prominently featured on coinage in various countries, including Cook Islands, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Liberia, Mauritius, Mongolia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates, among others. His presence on international coinage reflects the global recognition of his inspirational leadership and his impact on the principles of peace and justice.
