Shri Giriraj Singh Releases ₹75 Coin on Central Silk Board

The Union Minister of Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, released the ₹75 commemorative coin and a postal cover to celebrate the '75th Foundation Year of the Central Silk Board' today, September 20, 2024, at the Convocation Hall of Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in Mysuru.

MoS for External Affairs and Textiles, Shri Pabitra Margherita, Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, Member of Parliament for Mysuru, Shri Yaduveer Wadiyar, Karnataka Minister for Animal Husbandry and Sericulture K. Venkatesh, MP and CSB Member K. Sudhakar, MLA G.T. Devegowda, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles Rachana Shah, Joint Secretary Ministry of Textiles Prajakta L. Verma, Member-Secretary of Central Silk Board P. Sivakumar and Commissioner for Sericultural Development and Director of Sericulture Rajesh Gowda, and other dignitaries participated in the event.

Shri Giriraj Singh, announced that the Union Government has set a target of producing 50,000 metric tons of raw silk in 2024-25 by expanding sericulture farming and focusing on research, training, and extension activities in the sector. He highlighted the contributions of the Central Silk Board, established in 1949 for the benefit of farmers and weavers, and acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Maharajas of Mysuru in promoting sericulture. He noted that the renowned Mysuru Silk brand owes its legacy to Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, who established a silk saree industry in 1912.

Shri Giriraj Singh further added that the Central Silk Board was an initiative of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in 1949, which helped establish India as a leading silk producer and consumer globally. Under the leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the government aims to elevate silk production to new heights by 2030.
