PM Modi Releases ₹150 Coin on India Meteorological Department
The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi unveiled a ₹150 commemorative coin and a postal stamp to the celebrate 150 Years of India Meteorological Department (IMD) today, on January 14, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
In addition to Shri Narendra Modi, the event was attended by key dignitaries such as Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Ms. Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, and Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences. It also brought together scientists and engineers from the meteorological community, disaster management professionals, experts from various state and central government agencies, and representatives from non-governmental organizations.
Highlighting that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) was established on January 15, 1875, near Makar Sankranti, Shri Narendra Modi acknowledged the festival's deep cultural significance. He shared that Makar Sankranti, marking the sun's transition into Capricorn and the start of Uttarayan, is a time of increased sunlight in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of farming preparations. Shri Modi also extended warm greetings to citizens, emphasizing the diverse ways this festival is celebrated across India.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the growth of scientific institutions reflects a nation’s progress and innovation. He lauded IMD’s remarkable advancements in infrastructure and technology over the last decade, including the expansion of Doppler Weather Radars, Automatic Weather Stations, and district-level rainfall monitoring. He highlighted India’s use of space and digital technology in meteorology, referencing IMD's meteorological observatories in Antarctica and the introduction of supercomputers Ark and Arunika to enhance reliability. Shri Modi announced the launch of 'Mission Mausam,' showcasing India's commitment to a climate-smart future.
Shri Modi also highlighted India's global contributions, such as the Flash Flood Guidance system supporting neighboring countries. He reaffirmed India’s role as ‘Vishwa Bandhu,’ consistently aiding other nations during natural calamities, and commended IMD scientists for their efforts in enhancing India’s global stature.
This marks the first commemorative coin release for the year 2025, minted by the India Government Mint, Mumbai. The bookings are expected to open soon on the India Government Mint's website and will be updated in the current and upcoming bookings section.
