No Release Function for Mysore Medical College Coin

There was no official release function for the ₹100 commemorative coin marking the Centenary Celebration of Mysore Medical College and Research Institute. Neither the Government of India nor the institute organized a formal release event for the coin.

Instead, the India Government Mint, Mumbai, directly issued the coin and opened it for booking on March 7, 2025. The Ministry of Finance had earlier confirmed its issuance through a gazette notification dated November 25, 2024.

The Centenary Celebration event itself took place on September 28, 2024, where Hon'ble Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri Siddaramaiah inaugurated the closing ceremony. As part of the event, he released a commemorative postal cover and a souvenir to mark the milestone and later addressed the gathering after laying the foundation stone for various development projects.

This commemorative coin holds immense significance as Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMC&RI) is one of India's oldest medical institutions. Established in 1924, it has played a crucial role in shaping medical education and healthcare in the country. The institute has produced numerous distinguished doctors and contributed significantly to public health and medical research.

The reverse side of the ₹100 commemorative coin prominently features the historic Mysore Medical College building, symbolizing a century of excellence in medical education.

The absence of a formal release event has raised questions among numismatists and collectors, especially considering that many past commemorative coins were launched with official functions attended by dignitaries. Some speculate that the delayed approval from the Government of India may have led to the decision to directly issue the coin without a ceremonial event.

Despite the lack of an official release function, this coin remains a prestigious milestone for the institution, cementing its legacy in Republic India's numismatic history. Collectors and enthusiasts now have the opportunity to own a piece of this historic moment, either by visiting the Mint Premises or through the official website of the India Government Mint.
