2011 - New Rupee Symbol Series | Definitive Coin

The year 2011 marked the introduction of a new definitive coin series featuring the newly adopted ₹ (Rupee) symbol. The series retained the existing denominations while incorporating updated designs that prominently displayed the new national currency symbol.

In 2010, the Indian Rupee was assigned a new official currency symbol (₹), providing the Indian currency with a distinct international identity comparable to symbols such as $, £, €, and ¥. Designed by Shri D. Udaya Kumar, the symbol combines elements of the Devanagari letter "र" (Ra) and the Latin capital letter "R" without its vertical stem, while the two parallel horizontal strokes represent both the Indian Tricolour and the equality sign, symbolising the nation's aspirations for economic equality.

Following its adoption, the symbol was officially notified for use by the Central and State Governments, financial institutions, business entities, and the general public. The Government of India also approached the Unicode Consortium for the inclusion of the ₹ symbol in the Unicode Standard, enabling its universal use across digital platforms, computer systems, and electronic communications. The symbol was subsequently incorporated into the Unicode Standard, paving the way for its widespread adoption in software, operating systems, fonts, keyboards, and official publications. It later became a prominent feature on India's definitive coinage beginning with the 2011 series.

The 50 Paise denomination continued to be minted under this series until 2016, after which its production was discontinued. Although no new 50 Paise coins have been minted since then, the denomination continues to remain legal tender under the provisions of the Coinage Act, even though it is now rarely seen in everyday circulation. The ₹1 and ₹2 coins were introduced with reduced dimensions, weight, and thickness in this series, reflecting the Government's efforts to lower production costs while maintaining durability and ease of circulation.
