2026 - Dredging Corporation of India Limited | Commemorative Coin
A commemorative coin of ₹50 will be issued to mark the Golden Jubilee of Dredging Corporation of India Limited. The Ministry of Finance has issued the gazette notification on May 26, 2026.
Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCI) is a key maritime infrastructure company in India, established in 1976 to support the country’s growing need for port maintenance and development. Headquartered in Visakhapatnam, it plays an important role in ensuring that shipping channels, harbours, and ports remain navigable and capable of handling modern commercial vessels. Dredging, its core activity, involves the removal of silt, sand, and sediments from the seabed so that adequate water depth is maintained for safe and efficient maritime operations.
The formation of DCI marked India’s move towards self-reliance in a highly specialised field that was earlier dependent on foreign expertise. Over time, the organisation developed its own technical capabilities, fleet of dredging vessels, and operational expertise. It later became a publicly listed enterprise and is now jointly associated with major Indian port authorities, strengthening its integration with national port development efforts.
DCI undertakes maintenance dredging, capital dredging for new projects, land reclamation, beach nourishment, and inland waterway improvement works. These activities are essential not only for port efficiency but also for coastal protection and overall maritime infrastructure development. The company operates a range of specialised dredgers, including trailer suction hopper dredgers and cutter suction dredgers, which allow it to work in diverse marine and riverine conditions.
Over the years, DCI has contributed to major ports such as Visakhapatnam, Paradip, Chennai, Cochin, Kandla, and Kolkata-Haldia by enabling deeper channels and improved cargo handling capacity. Its work directly supports India’s trade and logistics network, as most international commerce relies on efficient port operations.
In recent years, the company has also been exploring new areas such as subsea cable support, offshore infrastructure, and inland water transport development, reflecting the changing needs of maritime infrastructure. While the sector remains capital-intensive and competitive, DCI continues to modernise its fleet and improve efficiency to stay relevant in both domestic and international markets.
Environmental responsibility has also become an important aspect of its operations, with increasing focus on sustainable dredging practices and coastal protection efforts. Overall, DCI remains a vital organisation in India’s maritime ecosystem, contributing significantly to trade, infrastructure development, and the country’s long-term economic growth.
