1996 - Mother's Health is Child's Health | Commemorative Coin

The year 1996 saw the commemorative coin on the theme 'Mother's Health is Child's Health' with a view to focus and reduce the infant mortality rate in the country on the World Population Day.

World Population Day is an annual observance held on July 11 to spotlight and address global population issues. Established in 1989 by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme, this significant day serves as a platform to enhance awareness about various population-related challenges. The initiative aims to shed light on crucial topics such as the significance of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, and human rights.

The inception of World Population Day can be attributed to Dr. K.C. Zachariah, a Senior Demographer at the World Bank. The suggestion for this observance arose when the world's population reached five billion. It is noteworthy that while public interest and awareness tend to peak at milestone increments of whole billions of people, the global population steadily increases by approximately 100 million every 14 months.

World Population Day underscores the importance of informed decision-making in managing population growth, recognizing the interconnectedness of demographic factors with broader issues like sustainable development, social equity, and individual well-being. As the world continues to navigate demographic shifts, this annual event serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges and opportunities associated with global population dynamics.
