2015 - 3rd India Africa Forum Summit | Commemorative Coin

The 9th commemorative coin for the year 2015 was released to commemorate the 3rd India Africa Forum Summit. This event also signifies the first release of a coin with a denomination of Rs 500.

The third summit, part of a rotational cycle, was scheduled to take place in New Delhi, India, from October 26 to 30, 2015. The summit was planned as a 5-day event, commencing with official-level consultations and culminating in a summit of heads of states/governments on October 29, 2015, followed by scheduled bilateral meetings on October 30, 2015. This summit represented the Modi government's most extensive diplomatic outreach, involving delegates from a significant number of African nations.

Originally slated for December 2014, with a three-year gap after the 2011 Addis Ababa summit, the event was rescheduled to 2015. Notably, this summit aimed to include a larger number of African leaders, unlike the previous two occasions where participation was limited to only 10-15 African countries. Reports in the media suggested that the postponement was influenced by the Ebola outbreak in Western African nations.

Invitations were extended to all 54 African nations through their respective Indian missions. However, the invitation to Libya remained undelivered due to the absence of a central functioning government, and the Indian embassy had to relocate to Tunisia. Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj personally presented the invitation to South African President Jacob Zuma during her visit to the African country in May 2015.
