1993 - Land-Vital Resource | Commemorative Coin

The 5th commemorative coin of 1993 was issued to mark the Land-Vital Resource; National Conservation Week.

Among the most enigmatic coins of the Republic of India is the ₹2 coin released in 1993, featuring the theme of ‘National Land Conservation Week.’ The coin was issued on 18 November 1993 and was intended to be unveiled by Mr. Sharad Pawar. It was slated for general circulation, and a notification from the Press Information Bureau (PIB) had been issued on 16 November 1993. However, despite these plans, the coin never entered widespread circulation, making it one of the rarest and most intriguing issues in India’s numismatic history.

The National Land Conservation Week, observed from 14 to 20 November 1992, highlighted the critical importance of land as a vital resource for India’s development, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the challenges of land degradation, soil erosion, and unsustainable agricultural practices, emphasizing the need for comprehensive land management and conservation strategies. Land, being the foundation of food security and rural livelihoods, requires careful stewardship to ensure its productivity and ecological balance for present and future generations.

During this week, various government agencies, research institutions, and community organizations engaged in activities to promote soil and water conservation, afforestation, and sustainable farming techniques. Workshops, demonstrations, and educational campaigns were organized to teach farmers and local communities effective methods of soil fertility enhancement, erosion control, and watershed management. The initiative also underscored the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with modern scientific practices to achieve long-term land sustainability.

National Land Conservation Week 1992 served as a platform to foster public participation in preserving and improving land resources. By encouraging collective action, it aimed to create awareness about the links between land conservation, agricultural productivity, and environmental protection. The observance reinforced the understanding that sustainable land management is essential not only for increasing food production but also for maintaining biodiversity, preventing desertification, and combating climate change.

The ₹2 coin issued in 1993, despite never reaching general circulation, stands as a unique reminder of India’s efforts to highlight the importance of land conservation. It symbolizes the nation’s commitment to promoting awareness, education, and active participation in preserving one of its most vital natural resources.
