1991 - Tourism Year | Commemorative Coin

The third commemorative coin for the year 1991 was released as part of Tourism Year celebrations.

With the objective of fostering tourism in India, the year 1991 was officially designated as 'TOURISM YEAR,' dedicating it to the development of tourism in the country. To mark this significant initiative, a 1 rupee coin was issued on 25th December 1991 for general circulation. Additionally, coins in the denominations of 2 rupees and 5 rupees, issued to commemorate this theme, were exclusively released as proof and uncirculated specimens, contributing to the numismatic heritage of India.

The 'TOURISM YEAR' not only aimed to promote India as a vibrant and diverse tourist destination but also served as a catalyst for economic growth through the tourism sector. These commemorative coins stand as tangible artifacts, reflecting the nation's commitment to showcasing its rich cultural heritage and attracting global travelers. The numismatic representations of this theme hold historical and cultural significance, capturing a moment in India's journey towards becoming a prominent global tourism hub.
