New Commemorative Coin: 350th Prakash Utsav of Guru Gobind Singh

The Government of India will issue a ₹350 commemorative coin to mark the 350th Prakash Utsav of Sri Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th and last Sikh Guru. The Ministry of Finance officially announced this issuance through a gazette notification on March 26, 2018.

Born as Gobind Rai on December 22, 1666, in Patna, Bihar, Guru Gobind Singh emerged as a towering figure in Sikh history. He succeeded his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, as the leader of the Sikh community at the tender age of nine. Guru Gobind Singh played a pivotal role in shaping Sikhism, most notably by instituting the Khalsa—a community of initiated Sikhs dedicated to upholding righteousness and justice. Renowned for his courage and unwavering commitment to justice, he championed the rights and freedoms of people from all walks of life. His literary contributions, including hymns and writings, form an integral part of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism.

The metal composition of the ₹350 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “350” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of the coin shall bear the picture of “Takht Shri Harimandir Ji Patna Sahib” in the centre, with inscription “तख्त श्री हरिमंदिर जी पटना साहिब” in Devanagari in the picture. The inscription “श्री गुरु गोबिंद सिंह जी का 350 वां प्रकाशोत्सव” shall be written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery and “350th Prakash Utsav of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji” in English language on the lower periphery of the coin are made. The year “1666” and “2016” in international numerals shall be flanked on the left and right periphery of the coin.
