New Commemorative Coin: 75 Years of Azad Hind Government
The Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi raised the national flag at the historic Red Fort, marking the 75th anniversary of the Azad Hind Fauj, widely known as the Indian National Army (INA), at a time when the nation is actively revisiting and honouring the legacy of its foremost freedom fighters.
Founded by ‘Netaji’ Subhas Chandra Bose, the INA played a defining role in India's struggle for independence by galvanizing Indian soldiers and inspiring a renewed sense of patriotism across the nation.
Continuing the commemorations, the Prime Minister Shri Modi is scheduled to visit Port Blair on December 30, 2018, where he will unfurl a 150-foot-long national flag to mark the platinum jubilee of the INA’s establishment. This act holds deep symbolic value, as Port Blair was the first territory liberated by the INA during World War II. The event aims to rekindle national pride and honor the sacrifices of the thousands who rallied behind Netaji’s vision of an independent India.
During his visit, the Prime Minister will also release a special postal stamp and a commemorative coin dedicated to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. These releases seek to immortalize Netaji’s unmatched contribution to India’s freedom struggle and reinforce public remembrance of his leadership and ideology. The commemorative coin, in particular, is expected to draw significant attention from collectors and historians alike, given its historical significance and the enduring reverence for Netaji.
Following the ceremonial events, the Prime Minister will pay homage at the Cellular Jail in Port Blair, a poignant reminder of India’s turbulent past. Known as “Kaala Pani,” the Cellular Jail once housed countless freedom fighters who endured severe hardship under colonial rule. The visit underscores the government’s effort to honor the sacrifices of lesser-known and unsung heroes who contributed immensely to the nation’s independence.
Additionally, several other commemorative coin releases are expected in the near future, including issues marking the Birth Centenary of Dr. M. G. Ramachandran, a towering figure in Indian cinema and politics, and the 350th Prakash Utsav of Shri Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru whose spiritual leadership and valor greatly shaped Sikh history. These forthcoming releases are highly anticipated within the numismatic community, reflecting the government’s continuing efforts to celebrate iconic personalities and key milestones in India’s cultural and historical journey.
Further updates on these significant announcements will follow as more details emerge through official channels.
