Vice President Releases ₹100 Coin on Jallianwala Bagh Massacre

The Hon'ble Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, released the ₹100 commemorative coin and postage stamp during his visit to Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar on April 13, 2019, marking the 100th anniversary of one of the goriest tragedies in human history and one of the darkest chapters of British colonial rule in India — the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

The solemn commemoration ceremony, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, was held to pay homage to the hundreds of innocent men, women, and children who were mercilessly killed on the fateful Baisakhi day of April 13, 1919, when Brigadier General Reginald Dyer ordered indiscriminate firing on a peaceful gathering.

Shri Naidu offered his respects by placing a wreath at the revered memorial, honoring the martyrs whose sacrifice ignited a turning point in India’s freedom struggle. In his heartfelt message shared on social media, the Vice President wrote that Jallianwala Bagh stands as an eternal reminder of how precious and hard-won India's freedom truly is. He expressed that the centenary is a moment to “shed a silent tear” for each innocent life that perished, reflecting on the cruelty and irrationality of colonial oppression.

He further stated that even a hundred years later, the pain, agony, and emotional scars of that inhuman massacre continue to resonate deeply in the hearts of all Indians. Stressing the need to learn from history, Shri Naidu observed that history is not merely a record of events but a profound lesson on the depths of brutality that unchecked power can descend to. He noted that the episode reinforces how the power of evil is temporary, while the spirit of justice and human dignity endures.

During the visit, the Vice President also toured a photo exhibition organized by the Regional Outreach Bureau, Bureau of Outreach and Communication, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. The exhibition featured 45 detailed panels dedicated to the Jallianwala Bagh incident, showcasing rare archival material, including contemporaneous newspaper clippings, excerpts from letters by Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore, and documents penned by other prominent national leaders. The exhibition also highlighted significant milestones of India’s freedom movement, offering valuable historical context to the tragic event.

The ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, including the Governor of Punjab, Shri V.P. Singh Badnore, the Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Shri Arun Goel, and several senior officials from both the central and state governments.

This release marks the third commemorative coin issued in 2019, minted by India Government Mint, Kolkata. The bookings are expected to open soon on the India Government Mint's website and will be updated in the current and upcoming bookings section.
