Govt to issue ₹550 Commemorative Coin on Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji

The Government of India will be issuing a ₹550 commemorative coin to mark the 550th Prakash Utsav of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on June 4, 2019, confirming this coin.

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus, is revered as a guiding light who brought messages of compassion, equality, and devotion to the Divine. Born in 1469 in Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib in Pakistan), he emphasized the oneness of God and the unity of all humanity. Through his teachings, travels, and compositions, he challenged social injustices, caste discrimination, and empty rituals, urging people instead to embrace truthful living, selfless service, and remembrance of the Almighty. His profound hymns form the foundation of the Guru Granth Sahib, continuing to inspire millions across the world.

The metal composition of the ₹550 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value “550” in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of the coin shall bear the picture of "Gurudwara Shri Ber Shaib, Sultanpur Lodi, Punjab." The inscription "श्री गुरु नानक देव जी का 550वां प्रकाश उत्सव" in Devanagari script and "550th Prakash Utsav of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji" in English shall be written on upper and lower periphery of the coin with the year 1469 and 2019 in International Numeral at left and right side of the coin.

The commemorative coin will carry a denomination of ₹550, making it the first-ever release in this value. The issuance of this commemorative coin had been anticipated earlier on this blog. The possibility and upcoming coins page have been updated for your reference.
