Govt to Introduce New Series of Coins into Circulation Soon
The Government of India is set to introduce the newly designed visually impaired-friendly coins in denominations of ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10, and ₹20 into circulation shortly.
During the presentation of the Union Budget 2019–20 in Parliament, Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman confirmed that “these new coins will soon be made available for public use,” signaling that the long-awaited definitive series is nearing its release into the banking system.
Earlier, on March 7, 2019, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi unveiled this new definitive series of coins, specially designed with enhanced tactile features to aid the visually impaired. The denominations—Re 1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10, and the newly introduced ₹20 bi-metallic coin—were showcased as part of the government’s commitment to inclusive and accessible currency.
With their distinctive designs, tactile marks, and improved aesthetics, these coins represent a significant step forward in India’s currency modernization efforts. Collectors and numismatists are eagerly awaiting their circulation, as the introduction of a new definitive series always marks an important milestone. Once these coins begin to enter the hands of the public, they are expected to become sought-after additions to collections, reflecting the next chapter in India’s numismatic evolution.
