Use Digital Payments to Prevent the Spread of Coronavirus!

In light of the outbreak of the coronavirus disease, experts suggest that the virus can potentially spread through currency notes. Consequently, transitioning to digital modes of transactions is recommended. However, complete avoidance of cash, especially in a country like India, may not be entirely feasible. Therefore, there is a demand for a safer alternative to paper currency notes.

To prevent the spread of viruses through cash, SBI Research has recommended that the government explore the feasibility of adopting polymer currency notes instead of traditional paper currency notes, following the practices of countries like Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada.

In its 'Ecowrap' report dated March 17, 2020, SBI Research stated, "Even with due precautions, avoidance of cash usage cannot be guaranteed, making it one of the easiest carriers for spreading any virus. Therefore, immediate steps should be taken to prevent the spread of any virus through currency notes. Countries like Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada have switched to polymer notes to reduce the risk of spreading infections through currency. Hence, the possibilities of using polymer notes in India should also be examined."

Meanwhile, many numismatic events and exhibitions that were scheduled to take place have been indefinitely postponed or canceled.
