PM Modi Releases Rs 75 Commemorative Coin on FAO

The Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi released a Rs 75 commemorative coin to mark the '75th Anniversary of FAO' today, on October 16, 2020, through a video conferencing ceremony. He dedicated to the nation, 17 recently developed biofortified varieties of crops.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister greeted all those working globally to eliminate malnutrition. He highlighted the crucial role of India’s farmers, agricultural scientists, Anganwadi and ASHA workers, who not only fill the nation’s granaries but also ensure food reaches the poorest, helping India fight malnutrition even during the COVID-19 crisis.

He acknowledged FAO’s long-standing support in boosting agricultural production and nutrition worldwide, including in India, and praised the World Food Programme’s Nobel Peace Prize as a major milestone. He recalled the leadership of Dr. Binay Ranjan Sen, who shaped the early years of the World Food Programme and understood the suffering caused by famine.

The Prime Minister noted that despite FAO’s guidance, India earlier faced barriers such as early pregnancies, lack of education, poor sanitation, and limited access to clean water, which hindered progress against malnutrition. Since 2014, however, India has adopted a holistic, multi-dimensional strategy through initiatives like POSHAN Abhiyaan, Swachh Bharat Mission, Jal Jeevan Mission, Mission Rainbow, and efforts to promote nutritious crops and coarse grains. He thanked FAO for supporting India’s proposal to declare 2023 as the International Year of Millets, which will benefit small farmers and improve global nutrition.

He highlighted the development of bio-fortified crop varieties and India’s massive food distribution during the pandemic, providing free rations—including rice or wheat and lentils—to 80 crore people. He noted that food security improved significantly after 2014 with full implementation of the Food Security Act and record food grain procurement by the government.

The Prime Minister said ongoing agricultural reforms aim to strengthen farmers, make markets more competitive, ensure MSP continues, and support FPOs to reduce wastage. He explained that contract farming reforms protect farmers legally, guarantee pre-agreed prices, shield farmers from penalties, and ensure their land remains secure.

He concluded that when farmers become stronger and their income increases, India’s fight against malnutrition becomes stronger too. He expressed confidence that growing cooperation between India and FAO will further accelerate the campaign against hunger and malnutrition.

This release marks the 2nd commemorative coin for the year 2020, minted by India Government Mint, Mumbai. The bookings are expected to open soon on the India Government Mint's website and will be updated in the current and upcoming bookings section.
