Shri Rajnath Singh Releases ₹100 Coin on Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi

The Union Minister of Defence, Shri Rajnath Singh, released the ₹100 commemorative coin today, August 18, 2024, on the occasion of the Birth Centenary of Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi. The event was held at Kalaivanar Arangam, Wallajah Road, Chennai.

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Shri M. K. Stalin, along with the Minister of Water Resources and General Secretary of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Shri Durai Murugan, among others, attended this event organized by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister expressed his joy at the release of a ₹100 coin in honor of the artist, a true leader in his field. He emphasized the sculptor's pivotal role in shaping Tamil Nadu as it stands today, and noted that various programs have been organized to celebrate the artist's centenary.

The Defence Minister highlighted that Karunanidhi's political journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and a deep connection with the people. Serving as Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister five times, Karunanidhi addressed the needs of the common people while skillfully navigating the complexities of Indian politics. He was not just a regional leader but a national figure whose influence was felt across the country. His advocacy for federalism was rooted in his understanding of India’s unity in diversity. He recognized that the strength of Indian democracy lies in its ability to accommodate different voices, cultures, and identities, and his insistence on state rights called for a more balanced and equitable distribution of power within the Union.

The Defence Minister further noted that India celebrated its 78th Independence Day this week. Before 1973, only the Governor hoisted the National Flag on Independence Day and Republic Day in the state. Karunanidhi challenged this practice and demanded that Chief Ministers be allowed to hoist the Tricolour on National Days. His advocacy led to the decision that only the Chief Minister would hoist the flag on Independence Day, making Karunanidhi the first Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to do so on August 15, 1974. Despite ideological differences, Thiru Karunanidhi played a constructive and positive role in supporting the Vajpayee government, providing crucial support on issues of national importance and during significant events.
