Expected Releases in 2026: A Overview of Possibilities

The year 2026 began with five commemorative coins issued in the first two months itself, setting an early tone for an active release schedule in the numismatic calendar.

However, this initial momentum was followed by an unexpected pause, as there were no coin releases in March. This temporary slowdown has, in a way, also provided some relief to collectors, especially after the heavy release schedules witnessed over the past couple of years. Nevertheless, the outlook for the remainder of the year continues to suggest the possibility of multiple releases, similar to recent trends.

Several important commemorative coin themes are either officially notified or currently under active consideration, indicating that 2026 could still emerge as a significant year for collectors and historians alike.

Among the most notable developments is the presence of six commemorative coins that have already been gazette notified but are still awaiting formal release. These include coins marking 100 Years of the India Security Press, Nashik, the Platinum Jubilee of IIT Kharagpur, the Birth Centenary of Shri Gurcharan Singh Tohra, 100 Years of the SBI New Delhi Main Branch, the Centenary Year of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, and the 150th Year of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science. The release of these coins is expected to take place over the next few months and remains keenly awaited by the numismatic community.

Beyond these pending releases, information emerging from various sources suggests that several meaningful and historically significant themes are being considered for commemorative coinage during the year, reinforcing expectations that 2026 may continue to be an active and noteworthy year for collectors.

Centenary Celebration of Andhra University:
Established in 1926, Andhra University is one of the oldest and most respected institutions of higher education in South India, with a century-long contribution to academic excellence and regional intellectual development. A ₹100 coin marking its centenary would suitably recognise its role in education and nation-building, especially in the Telugu-speaking regions.

Union Public Service Commission:
The Commission traces its origins to 1926 and later evolved into India’s constitutional body responsible for merit-based civil services recruitment. Its centenary represents a significant milestone in strengthening administrative professionalism and institutional continuity in India, making it a deserving subject for commemorative recognition.

HLL Lifecare Limited:
Established in 1966, HLL Lifecare Limited has played an important role in supporting India’s public health programmes through healthcare products, family planning initiatives, and medical services. A ₹60 commemorative coin marking its diamond jubilee would acknowledge its contribution to the country’s healthcare sector.

Somnath Swabhiman Parv:
This observance marks a significant celebration at the Somnath Temple in Gujarat, marking 1,000 years since the 1026 invasion by Mahmud of Ghazni. The occasion honours the temple’s resilience through repeated historical challenges and celebrates it as a symbol of India’s enduring faith and civilisational strength. It also marks 75 years since the temple’s reconstruction after independence, reflecting cultural restoration and renewed national confidence. A commemorative coin is expected to mark this important historical and civilisational milestone.

Mahatma Jyotiba Phule:
The Government of India has initiated a nationwide two-year commemoration from April 11, 2026 to April 11, 2028 to mark his 200th birth anniversary, approved by the National Implementation Committee under the Union Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation. A ₹200 coin is expected during this period to honour his pioneering contributions to social equality and education.

Pingali Venkayya:
The year marks the 150th birth anniversary of Pingali Venkayya, associated with the early design of India’s national flag. His tricolour concept laid the foundation for one of the most recognisable symbols of Indian identity, and a commemorative coin would appropriately recognise his historic contribution.

Potti Sriramulu:
Efforts are underway by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and regional leaders to secure a commemorative coin marking his 125th birth anniversary in honour of his sacrifice for the formation of India’s first linguistic state, which later shaped the linguistic reorganisation of states across the country.

Shri Guru Ravidass:
The Government of Punjab celebrating the 650th Prakash Purab of Sri Guru Ravidass Ji on a grand scale through year-long events to be held from February 2026 to February 2027. A revered as a spiritual teacher, poet, and social reformer of the Bhakti movement, Shri Guru Ravidass promoted equality, devotion, and social harmony. The observance may lead to the introduction of a ₹650 unique denomination in Republic India coinage.

The potential issues under consideration for 2026 demonstrate how commemorative coinage continues to function not merely as currency but also as a meaningful medium for preserving collective memory and marking important national milestones. However, these themes can be considered confirmed only after the official gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Finance.

With several gazette-notified coins still awaiting release, collectors can remain optimistic that 2026 may yet witness a number of noteworthy issues.

At the same time, many collectors are increasingly expressing the view that future commemorative coins should preferably be issued in nickel silver rather than in quaternary alloy and pure silver variants. The continued rise in silver prices has made it difficult for collectors to keep pace with every release, especially when multiple themes are issued within a single year. More affordable base-metal issues would help ensure wider participation and sustain enthusiasm within the numismatic community.
