1982 - World Food Day | Commemorative Coin

The first commemorative coin issued in 1982 was released to mark 'World Food Day,' continuing the tradition for the consecutive second year, although no higher non-circulating denomination coins were issued.

World Food Day, celebrated globally every year on October 16, commemorates the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945. This significant date is also recognized as Food Engineer Day.

Established during the 20th General Conference of FAO's Member Countries in November 1979, World Food Day (WFD) originated from an idea suggested by the Hungarian Delegation, led by the former Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food, Dr. Pál Romány. Their active role during the 20th Session of the FAO Conference contributed to the initiation of this worldwide celebration. Since its establishment, World Food Day has been observed annually in more than 150 countries, serving as a vital platform to raise awareness about the underlying issues of poverty and hunger.

Moreover, World Food Day goes beyond awareness-raising; it serves as a catalyst for collective action to address global food challenges. It brings together nations, organizations, and individuals in a shared commitment to achieving food security, ending hunger, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The annual observance emphasizes the crucial role of food in shaping our world and underscores the need for collaborative efforts to build a more equitable and food-secure future.
