2018 - Atal Bihari Vajpayee | Commemorative Coin

The 3rd commemorative coin of 2018 was released to mark the Birth Anniversary of the former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, during the celebrations of Good Governance Week.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was one of India’s most respected statesmen, a visionary leader whose political career spanned over six decades and whose influence shaped modern Indian democracy. Born on 25 December 1924 in Gwalior, he grew up in a culturally vibrant environment that nurtured his early interest in literature, debate, and public life. Known for his eloquence, moderation, and firm conviction in national progress, Vajpayee emerged as a central figure in Indian politics and became the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete a full term in office.

Vajpayee’s political journey began with his involvement in the freedom movement and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which eventually led him to co-found the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in the 1950s. Over the decades, he became known for his sharp parliamentary debates and his ability to build consensus across political boundaries. His reputation as a statesman grew steadily, and when the Bharatiya Janata Party was formed in 1980, he became its first president, setting the foundation for it to become a major national force.

His tenure as Prime Minister marked a period of significant transformation for India. Vajpayee first briefly served as Prime Minister in 1996, followed by another short term in 1998, and ultimately a full term from 1999 to 2004. One of the defining moments of his leadership was the 1998 Pokhran-II nuclear tests, which established India as a nuclear weapons state. Despite global pressure, his government’s decision was guided by national security considerations, and Vajpayee simultaneously extended a hand of peace to neighboring countries, embodying his philosophy of “shakti aur shanti”—strength and peace.

Under his stewardship, India witnessed major reforms and infrastructure development. His government launched the ambitious Golden Quadrilateral project, which reshaped the nation’s road network and connected major cities, enhancing trade and mobility. The push for telecom reforms during his tenure also played a crucial role in setting India on its path toward the digital age.

Vajpayee was renowned not only for his governance but also for his humane approach to politics. His efforts to improve India–Pakistan relations through initiatives such as the Lahore Bus Service and his outreach during times of conflict reflected his belief that dialogue was essential for lasting peace. The famous Vajpayee doctrine emphasized peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and diplomatic engagement as cornerstones of foreign policy.

Apart from politics, Vajpayee’s contributions to literature and poetry earned him admiration across generations. His Hindi poems, filled with emotion and philosophical depth, showcased his reflective nature and his ability to articulate the complexities of life with simplicity and grace. His oratory, both in Parliament and public forums, elevated political discourse and left an enduring legacy.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 2015 in recognition of his immense contributions to the nation. He passed away on 16 August 2018, leaving behind a legacy defined by leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to India’s progress. His life continues to inspire citizens across the country, reminding them that inclusive governance, courage, and compassion are the hallmarks of true statesmanship.
