New Commemorative Coin: Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi

The Government of India will issue the commemorative coin with denominations of ₹100 and ₹10 to mark the Birth Centenary of Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi. The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on September 11, 2017, confirming this coin.

Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi was one of India’s greatest Carnatic vocalists and a legendary figure in Indian classical music. Renowned for her melodious voice and exceptional mastery of Carnatic music, she became the first Indian musician to receive the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. Her music transcended linguistic and regional boundaries, earning her admiration across India and around the world. Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi remains an enduring symbol of India’s rich musical and cultural heritage.

The metal composition of the ₹100 coin will consist of a Quaternary Alloy, comprising 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel, and 5% Zinc. The coin will weigh 35 grams and have a diameter of 44 mm, featuring 200 serrations along the edge. While the ₹10 coin will be bi-metallic, with an Aluminium Bronze outer ring and a Copper-Nickel centre. The coin's description is as follows.

Obverse: The face of both the coins shall bear the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, flanked on the left periphery with the word “भारत” in Devanagari script and on the right periphery with the word “INDIA” in English. It shall also bear the Rupee symbol “₹” and denominational value in the international numerals below the Lion Capitol.

Reverse: This face of both the coins shall bear the portrait of “Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi” in the centre. The inscription "डॉ.एम.एस.सुब्बुलक्ष्मी की जन्मशती” shall be written in Devanagari script on the upper periphery and "Birth Centenary of Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi” in English on the lower periphery of the coin. The year “1916- 2016” in international numeral shall be flanked on right periphery of the coin.

The issuance of this commemorative theme was discussed on this blog last week. The release ceremony is expected to take place on September 19, 2017, and the commemorative coin is reportedly being minted at the India Government Mint, Mumbai. The Government of India will issue a ₹100 commemorative coin  as part of the Centenary Celebration of  Mahanayak Uttam Kumar . The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on September 3, 2026, confirming this coin. Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, born Arun Kumar Chatterjee on September 3, 1926, was one of the most celebrated actors in the history of Indian cinema. Revered as the “Mahanayak” of Bengali cinema, he captivated audiences with his remarkable acting, charismatic screen presence and versatility. His unforgettable partnership with Suchitra Sen created some of the most iconic films of Bengali cinema. PM Modi Releases ₹100 Coin on Shri Ram College of Commerce

The Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, released the ₹100  commemorative coin  to mark the Centenary Year of Shri Ram College of Commerce  (SRCC), University of Delhi, today, on September 5, 2026, during his participation at the college campus in New Delhi, coinciding with Teachers' Day.
