Shri Arun Jaitley Releases Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Coins

The Hon'ble Minister of Finance, Shri Arun Jaitley, released the ₹100 and ₹5 commemorative coins to mark the Birth Centenary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya at an event organised by the Deendayal Research Institute on September 24, 2017 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

The event was attended by the Union Minister of State for Culture, Dr. Mahesh Sharma, the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, Dr. Rajiv Kumar, and other distinguished dignitaries.

Shri Arun Jaitley, delivered the valedictory address. He spoke about the ideological churning taking place in India’s political arena and pointed out that national security was being threatened by the convergence of ultra-Left ideologies and the Islamic State (IS).

He reiterated the importance of delivering basic services to the poor and highlighted the government’s initiatives and achievements in the areas of financial inclusion and Direct Benefit Transfer. He also stressed the importance of sanitation and infrastructure development for the sustainable growth of the country.

Shri Jaitley underlined the need for additional resource allocation to promote the rural economy, improve connectivity and support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). He further emphasized that economic growth could benefit both the poor and the rich, contrary to the general belief that its benefits accrue only to the wealthy. He advocated greater financial inclusion and investment in infrastructure, stating that these measures could yield significant benefits and help address the economic difficulties faced by poorer sections of society.

This release marks the third commemorative coin for the year 2017, coins minted by the India Government Mint, Kolkata. Last year, the Ministry of Finance had issued the gazette notification confirming the issuance of this commemorative coin on August 29, 2016.

The Government of India will issue a ₹100 commemorative coin  as part of the Centenary Celebration of  Mahanayak Uttam Kumar . The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on September 3, 2026, confirming this coin. Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, born Arun Kumar Chatterjee on September 3, 1926, was one of the most celebrated actors in the history of Indian cinema. The Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, released the ₹100  commemorative coin  to mark the Centenary Year of Shri Ram College of Commerce  (SRCC), University of Delhi, today, on September 5, 2026, during his participation at the college campus in New Delhi, coinciding with Teachers' Day.
