Vice President Releases M.S.Subbulakshmi Commemorative Coins

The Hon'ble Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, released the commemorative coin to mark the Birth Centenary of Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi at an event on September 19, 2017, in New Delhi. The Minister of State for Culture (I/C) and Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Dr. Mahesh Sharma, and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, the Vice President said that India is a land of rich cultural heritage, with music in diverse genres reflecting the country’s remarkable plurality. He said that this rich musical heritage and its unifying role in bringing people together, transcending religions, regions, castes and communities, are among the defining features of India.

The Vice President said that the roots of Indian music can be traced to Vedic literature, particularly the Sama Veda. He emphasized that every note and cadence associated with India’s ancient musical traditions must be preserved and propagated. He described it as the collective responsibility of society to preserve the cultural heritage inherited from our forefathers and pass it on to future generations.

Speaking about Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi, the Vice President said that her music was immortal and had influenced and enthralled people across the country. He observed that music acquired a divine dimension through her voice and her rendition of various compositions. He also recalled that she was the first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour, and the first Indian musician to perform at the United Nations General Assembly.

This release marks the second commemorative theme for the year 2017, coins minted by the India Government Mint, Mumbai.

New Commemorative Coin: Mahanayak Uttam Kumar

The Government of India will issue a ₹100 commemorative coin  as part of the Centenary Celebration of  Mahanayak Uttam Kumar . The Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on September 3, 2026, confirming this coin. Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, born Arun Kumar Chatterjee on September 3, 1926, was one of the most celebrated actors in the history of Indian cinema. Revered as the “Mahanayak” of Bengali cinema, he captivated audiences with his remarkable acting, charismatic screen presence and versatility. His unforgettable partnership with Suchitra Sen created some of the most iconic films of Bengali cinema. With classics such as Saptapadi, Harano Sur, Nayak and Antony Firingee, Uttam Kumar left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire generations. PM Modi Releases ₹100 Coin on Shri Ram College of Commerce

The Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, released the ₹100  commemorative coin  to mark the Centenary Year of Shri Ram College of Commerce  (SRCC), University of Delhi, today, on September 5, 2026, during his participation at the college campus in New Delhi, coinciding with Teachers' Day. The release ceremony was attended by the Union Minister of Education, Shri Pralhad Joshi; Shri Ajay S.
