New Commemorative Coin: Central Bureau of Investigation

The Government of India will be issuing a Rs 60 commemorative coin to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Ministry of Finance has issued the gazette notification today confirming the same.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is the premier investigating agency of India formed on 1 April 1963 through a Home Ministry resolution. It operates under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. Originally set up to investigate bribery and governmental corruption, in 1965 it received expanded jurisdiction to investigate breaches of central laws enforceable by the Government of India, multi-state organised crime, multi-agency or international cases. The agency has been known to investigate several economic crimes, special crimes, cases of corruption and other cases.

The metal composition of the coin will be Quaternary Alloy (50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Nickel and 5% Zinc). The weight of the coin will be 35 grams and 44 mm in diameter with 200 serrations at the edge. The description of the coin is as below.

Obverse:  The face of the coin shall bear the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar in the center with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed  below, flanked  with the  word “भारत” and  "INDIA" at right and left periphery of the coin with Rupee Symbol "₹” and denomination  value “60” in International Numerals below the Ashoka Lion Capital.

Reverse: The face of coin shall bear the logo of Central Bureau of Investigation in the centre of the coin. Exactly below this logo, the inscription in English “Diamond Jubilee Year" and below this “हीरक जयंती वर्ष” shall be written in Devnagari script and below this “1963- 2023” shall be written. The inscription “केंद्रीय अन्वेषण ब्यूरो” in Devnagari script shall be written on the upper periphery and the inscription “Central Bureau of Investigation” in English shall be written on the lower periphery of the coin.

The commemorative coin is scheduled to release mostly on 1st April 2023. The possibility of this commemorative coin was posted on this blog in February 2023 after Shri Ajay Agarwal, Director (Finance) of Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India (SPMCIL) hinted about the issue of the commemorative coin in an interview at World Money Fair 3-5 Feb 2023, Berlin, Germany.
